In this case, you need to add --prefix=/usr. This is one of the major reasons I have tried to stay with rpm (or deb) based distros. But I installed pacman. That is, since you upgraded to the qt3 packages from SoS you have to get your *-devel packages from there too.

any advice? It actually made it through the configure, which I count as a huge step forward. Thanks! sudo apt-get install libqt4-dev I was thinking that the libqt4-dev would install the headers and libraries.

You might be able to sort the java problems, but the tired developers pun on their slogan "write once, debug everywhere" is unfortunately still fairly true at least in my experience
