I have worked on DevIL for almost 2 1/2 years and need to move on with my life. Thanks to your answer I found the problem - I didn't download the DevIL-devel package (only the two I mentioned in my post). Don't you think you should start at another more "hello world" like level and come back to something more difficult later?! Right now, it only loads from files, but that should be changed in the next release.
